SURVIVING THE GAUNTLET
The year is 5514. What we would call magic, they call dark biodynamics. RT (short for Redder Torch) is arriving on the Taltrix space cruiser, the most elite university of dark biodynamics in the three regions of colonized space. RT is set to join her older brother Avi, and they both hope they’ll be safe at Taltrix from their father’s followers.
Grave Torch has been held in supermax ever since the Final Wars when he kidnapped his children. He tried to claim RT was the unifier of the multiverse, a mystical figure predicted in the early tenets of dark biodynamic research. Everyone seems to have an opinion on RT if not a massive grudge. Her brother Avi is her biggest ally, but his girlfriend has an agenda that drives a wedge between them.
Each year, all the Taltrix students must run the gauntlet on the mercenary training planet Keplar Neptune. When it’s RT’s turn, the whole galaxy tunes in to watch as the gauntlet throws everything at her. If she fails, she’ll lose all her powers and possibly her life. Embracing her destiny has never been more dangerous. If she survives, it’ll prove her father right and restart a war.
The Taltrix Series is set in the 5000 Universe. Several more stories are forthcoming.

TALTRIX BOOK ONE: SURVIVING THE GAUNTLET is a space opera in the tradition of Star Wars and Dune. It imagines a world where humans have gone far beyond Earth and the basic powers of the mind that we possess now. Far in the future, the full capacity of human science and evolution are expressed with telepathy, energy manipulation, healing, advanced speed, enhanced strength, computer interfacing, and so much more. Science too has been evolving including the cloud. Connectivity to the cloud and access therein is segmented within society based upon one's "gifts" which are psi abilities. Those without strong abilities are restricted from accessing the most valuable of rooms and must operate at a slower pace. None without certified gifts and training can operate planetary monopolies or stand as Representatives of planets. Those categorized "ungifted" must wear special blocking tech to safeguard their minds from takeover or manipulation. All humans are ungifted until their early twenties when the gift comes in. Before such time, their minds are locked. Much like how a woman who has not started menstruating cannot carry a child or a man who cannot yet ejaculate cannot impregnate anyone. The opening of a mind is considered the last stage of puberty and the transition into adulthood. This is accepted in all three regions.
The Three Regions of the CN Ruled Galaxy
The CN (Congress of Nations) ruled galaxy expands out from Earth in spheres of 5000 light year distances. See map below. The most populated region of space is Region One. The next is Region Two. Region Three is mostly empty except for Dayths, who are the last remnants of humanity who consider violence a civilized way to communicate and resolve conflicts.
Region One includes the Solar System, although Earth has only been habitable for the last twenty-one years, since the day RT was born. On that day, the tech left behind on Earth sent communication to the rest of the CN ruled galaxy that Earth was once again clean and cool enough to support human life. Since that time, several factions have been vying to return to our blue planet but internal squabbling at the CN has made such re-colonization impossible. The only life officially sanctioned by the CN to thrive on Earth in 5514 is non-human.
